The purpose of the International Qualifications Exam (IQEX) is to facilitate the US CPA qualification process for those accounting professionals from other countries whose professional bodies have entered into mutual recognition agreements with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA). At present, such agreements are in effect only with:

Australia and United States Mutual Recognition Agreement (Chartered Accountants - ICAA Members)
Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants
Chartered Accountants Ireland
Instituto Mexican de Contadores Publicos
New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants
Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants

 The IQEX examination is administered each year by the IQEX Unit of NASBA during a three week testing period in September, October OR November. To find out if you qualify to take the IQEX exam see the NASBA – IQEX Exam website.

An individual who has passed the International Qualifications Exam (IQEX) is eligible to  receive Illinois certification.

The Process

To apply for certification through IQEX complete these steps:

  1. Go to the online system and create an account unless you have previously submitted an application or other documentation to the Illinois Board of Examiners as an online account has already been established for you. Contact the Illinois Board of Examiners to obtain your account information.   
  2. Complete the online application. Pay the $345.00 fee online via a credit card.
  3. Go to the NASBA Store at to request the release of your IQEX score to the Illinois Board of Examiners. Complete the NASBA Candidate Score Transfer and select IQEX for the “From Jurisdiction.” 

Once the Illinois Board of Examiners has received your online application and your IQEX score
from NASBA your application will be evaluated. When the evaluation is complete you will  receive a letter indicating whether you have been approved.
